Camp Canopy – What’s not to love about this experience!

Are you a High School student (or will be this coming fall) who really appreciates Ohio’s great outdoors?  Perhaps after graduation you’ve been thinking about pursuing a career as a conservationist?  If so, Camp Canopy is definitely one adventure-filled week you should seriously consider adding to your summer “to do” list.

Held at the Ohio FFA Camp Muskingum in Carrollton, from June 7th through the 12th,

Camp Canopy is one gathering where you can experience hands-on instruction in forestry management and related activities.

Or you can see what may be involved in becoming a wildlife researcher or Officer, if that’s where your main interest lies!  One thing is for certain: Camp Canopy will prove to be the perfect setting for nature learning and adventure seeking, by all those participating in this memorable excursion, guaranteed!

Yes, there will be some class time spent learning about various topics, like forest ecology, tree identification and care, wildlife and habitat management and other stewardship principles.  But like the old saying, ‘all work and no play makes ‘Jack’ (and Jill!) a dull boy and girl’.  So to remedy that, you’ll also be able to go swimming, hiking, try your shooting skills at an archery station, or simply enjoy those evening campfires with friends that you will no doubt make that week!

Camp Canopy is also a place where “future” foresters and wildlife professionals can appreciably expand their knowledge of forestry and wildlife.  It’s a grand opportunity to “challenge yourself, try new things, explore nature, experience adventures and be an important part of the team!”   As one former camper stated, this camp really helps an individual with their “team building and leadership skills”, which are beneficial in all aspects of life later on.

Camp Canopy registrations are now being taken and are open to incoming freshmen through graduating seniors (up to 19 years of age).   You can sign up online at https://campcanopy.com/.   The cost to attend Camp Canopy this year is $500 (if you register by May 4th, $550 afterwards), which includes meals and all the programs!

To help offset the cost to attend, the Erie Soil and Water Conservation District will once again be offering two, $300 sponsorships to eligible Erie County high school (or those who will be this fall) boys and girls interested in attending the camp this summer!

If interested in applying for a Camp Canopy scholarship, mail a letter of request to the Erie SWCD office, 2900 Columbus Ave., Room 131, Sandusky, OH  44870.  In the letter, please explain the reason you’d like to participate in this camp in June, along with your contact information.

At the conclusion of the week, camp participants will also be provided the opportunity to take a test, which may qualify them for a scholarship to The Ohio State University’s School of Environment and Natural Resources, Hocking College’s School of Natural Resources, Zane State College, or a scholarship at one of the other natural resource schools of the student’s choice.

For questions with regard to the scholarship being provided by the Erie SWCD to attend Camp Canopy, contact our office at 419-626-5211.  More information on Camp Canopy can also be found on the Camp Canopy website.
