“I think that I shall never see, a poem as lovely as a tree…” You may not remember the author, yet the words in that sonnet are a familiar recollection no doubt. And even though one of the lines says that “…only God can make a tree”, you and I certainly have the power to plant one…or even a bunch of them! Trees remain one of our most vital natural resources and we all know the various environmental benefits they provide: oxygen, better air quality, water conservation, and vital wildlife habitat.
In the effort to provide landowners the opportunity to purchase seedlings to create windbreaks, enhance their woodlots, provide food and shelter for critters, or just for aesthetics, nearly all of the 88 Soil and Water Conservation Districts throughout Ohio host a tree/shrub seedling sale every spring. Typically offering a variety of species, it is a fairly equitable way for folks to purchase tree/shrub seedlings, as well as other ground covers that will enable them to achieve their objectives.
Though our Erie SWCD will not be conducting a tree seedling sale this time around, almost all of our neighboring SWCD’s will be.. Here are some of the local SWCD’s, what they have to offer this year, and ordering/pickup information:
